• A martial eagle can spot a hyrax the size of a guinea pig from 5 kilometres away while soaring at 2,000 metres altitude — its eyes are nearly three times sharper than human vision, with a fovea (the sharp-focus centre of the retina) twice the diameter of ours. When it dives, it reaches 150 mph, folding its 2.6-metre wingspan into a projectile that hits with the force of a sledgehammer. A single talon is as thick as a human finger and curved like a sickle.
• For 200 years, pastoral communities across Africa have hunted martial eagles almost to extinction — not because they're livestock killers, but because local legends said they could snatch human babies.
