• A cottontail's ears are lined with blood vessels so dense they act like radiators — blood flows through them to dump heat into the desert air, cooling the entire body by up to 5°C. When the temperature drops at night, those same vessels constrict to trap warmth inside. It's thermoregulation engineered into flesh and fur.
• Holzner cottontails breed year-round in the southwestern desert, producing up to 5 litters annually with 4–8 kits per litter. A single female can birth 30–40 offspring in a calendar year — yet populations remain stable, which means predation is catastrophically efficient. For every cottontail born, most never reach breeding age.
• The cottontail's hind legs are explosive springs: muscle fibres make up 33% of hind leg mass, compared to 20% in human legs. They can launch to 25 km/h from a standstill and execute a zigzag pattern mid-sprint that even coyotes struggle to track — not because the rabbit is faster, but because it changes direction 2–3 times per second.
• A cottontail's eyes are positioned on the sides of its skull, giving it a 360-degree field of view without turning its head. • Cottontails are crepuscular, most active at dawn and dusk, because that's when predator vision performs worst. Hawks see ultraviolet light in daylight and dominate the sky.
