She rules a colony of up to 40 individuals, and when she dies, her successor can immediately stop ageing the same way.
• These animals feel almost no pain from acid or chilli peppers because they lack a single protein—TRPV1—that other mammals use to sense burning sensations. A mole-rat can chew through capsaicin-soaked plant roots that would make a human weep, completely unbothered.
