• The forewings of the heart and dart range from pale to dark brown, but the uniquely shaped dark stigmata give it an unmistakable heart-like and dart-like pattern. Its wingspan measures 35-44 mm; the hindwings are whitish, a shade that is paler than those of the heart and club but darker than the turnip moth, and because colour and markings vary widely, identification of worn examples often requires genital examination.
• The caterpillars of the heart and dart are grey-brown with a paler underside, a pale dorsal line and conspicuous black point warts. They are notorious cutworms, frequently severing or fatally damaging the base of both wild and cultivated plants, and when spring arrives they pupate, emerging later as adult moths.
• The pupa of the heart and dart is a vivid bright red, a striking colour that contrasts with the darker larval stage. Attached to the underside of the pupa, the cremaster bears two short, curved thorns that help anchor it in the soil. After overwintering as a mature larva, the insect forms this red pupa in spring before the adult emerges.
• A dark area at the front of the thorax appears as a horizontal bar when the moth is viewed head-on. This marking is part of a pattern that is highly variable in both colour and markings across individuals. In worn or atypical specimens the bar can become indistinct, making visual identification unreliable. Consequently, experts often need to examine the genitalia to confirm the species.
