• A Great Spangled Fritillary caterpillar will starve rather than eat anything but violets — so picky that it refuses pansies, despite being in the same plant family. This extreme specialization means the entire species depends on violet meadows that humans keep shrinking. A single development project can erase the food source for millions of butterflies across an entire region.
• Female Great Spangled Fritillaries lay their eggs on violet leaves in late summer, but the caterpillars don't hatch until spring — spending 6 months frozen solid inside the egg in temperatures that drop below -20°C. Their bodies produce a natural antifreeze (glycerol) that keeps their cells from crystallizing. One frost-free winter, and entire local populations can collapse.
• The males patrol meadows in a specific search pattern called 'hilltopping' — climbing to the highest point in a valley and flying in a figure-eight loop, waiting for females to arrive.
