- Harpy eagles can snatch prey weighing up to half their own body mass, letting them lift sloths and monkeys that tip the scales at 6-9 kg (13-20 lb).
- A single female can weigh as much as 12.3 kg (27 lb) in captivity, far above the typical 6-9 kg range for wild adults, showing how abundant food can push size limits. "An exceptionally large captive female, "Jezebel", weighed 12.3 kg (27 lb)."
- Harpy nests sit 16-43 m (52-141 ft) up in emergent trees, often kapok or Brazil-nut giants, and can be 1.2 m deep and 1.5 m across. Such massive platforms need towering, undisturbed trees; loss of these giants directly reduces breeding sites and drives population collapse.
- Territories span about 30 km², with only three to six nests per 100 km², so each loss is a big hit. Because they need such large, intact forest blocks, even modest deforestation (50 % loss) makes the area unsuitable for breeding, accelerating their decline.
- A 2023 attack in French Guiana marked the first scientifically documented harpy strike on a human, showing how rare such events are. While the species rarely targets people, the incident fuels fear-driven killings that compound habitat loss, threatening a bird already listed as vulnerable.
