• A harnessed tiger moth's wings are a warning label written in contrasting stripes — bold black and white patterns that say 'don't eat me' to predators who've learned the lesson before. But the real defence is chemical: when threatened, the moth produces a frothy foam from glands near its neck, laced with toxins it sequestered from the plants it ate as a caterpillar. The colour pattern is an honest advertisement of that poison, which means a bird that tastes one harnessed tiger moth once will skip every striped moth it sees for months.
• Male harnessed tiger moths have ultrasonic ears — tiny tympana (eardrums) tuned to frequencies between 40 and 100 kHz that are completely inaudible to humans.
