• Harnessed tiger moths produce high-frequency clicks with specialised tymbals located on the metathorax. These clicks are generated by the same mechanism that cicadas use, allowing the moth to emit rapid sound pulses. The acoustic signals serve a dual purpose: they startle or confuse predators and also act as a signalling channel during courtship. This combination of defence and communication is a key behavioural trait of the species.
• During metamorphosis the caterpillar spins a cocoon that is composed almost entirely of its own shed hairs, turning its fuzz into a protective silk-like casing. This hair-based shelter encloses the pupa, shielding it from environmental hazards and predators while the insect undergoes its transformation.
