• A male hamadryas baboon's cape of hair can weigh 2 kilograms and grows so thick it protects his neck and shoulders from bites during fights — he's armoured like a medieval warrior, which is why females choose him. The bigger the cape, the higher his rank in the troop. When he loses fights, his hair thins visibly, and his status drops with it.
• Unlike almost every other baboon species, hamadryas males don't fight over females they see daily — they kidnap them as juveniles and raise them in isolation for years. A male herds his 1 to 10 females like a shepherd tends sheep, biting stragglers on the rump if they wander. This 'harem' system was so alien to early primatologists that some thought hamadryas baboons were a separate species entirely.
• Hamadryas baboons sleep on vertical cliff faces 300 metres high, packed so tightly that mothers and infants cling to stone overhangs in the dark. They've done this for thousands of years on the same cliffs — some roosting sites haven't changed in recorded human history. Predators cannot climb at night, making the rock their fortress.
• When a hamadryas baboon spots a leopard or eagle, it doesn't shriek a generic alarm — it produces a specific grunt that tells the troop which predator it is and where. A 'leopard' grunt sends them scrambling to the cliffs; an 'eagle' grunt makes them look up and crouch. Each call is a word in a language only they understand.
• Young hamadryas males form bachelor groups and spend years gaming social power before ever attempting to steal a female, watching older males to learn the rules of rank and respect. A male's first kidnapped female often leaves him for a higher-ranking rival — failure teaches him faster. Only by age 7 or 8 does a male's harem stabilize, making him one of the only primates that must earn both strength and politics to breed.
