• A butterfly smaller than your thumbnail has cracked camouflage so perfect that predators often land on it by mistake. The green hairstreak's wings are metallic emerald underneath — not shimmering with pigment but sculpted at the molecular scale, each scale a tiny prism that bounces light like stained glass. Flip it over and the brown upperwings vanish against lichen and bark. Researchers studying predator attacks found that birds frequently perch directly on resting hairstreaks, unable to distinguish the insect from its background.
