Fascinating facts about the Great Jerboa
- Spanning steppes, northern deserts, and even the arid edges of western Xinjiang, China, the great jerboa occupies a swath from western Ukraine through European Russia to Kazakhstan and northern Uzbekistan. It favors sparse grassland, sloping ravine sides, road verges and field edges, especially where the ground is clay.
- A single great jerboa maintains three kinds of burrows: permanent chambers for summer, permanent chambers for winter, and temporary retreats for quick escapes. During the first frosts it hibernates until spring, often sharing a nest with several companions, turning the cold season into a communal shelter.
- The great jerboa outranks every other jerboa in size, with a body that stretches 180 mm (7.1 in) and a tail that tops out at 260 mm (10 in).
- When a Gagea bulb lies hidden underground, the great jerboa bites it open with its sharp incisors, effectively using its teeth as a digging tool. This feeding habit lets it extract the bulb, while grains and bark serve only as occasional snacks.
- Although the International Union for Conservation of Nature lists the great jerboa as "least concern," its populations are threatened in Ukraine and European Russia by intensification of agriculture and other alterations to its habitat.
