• The great jerboa's tail makes up 70% of its entire body length but weighs almost nothing — it's a counter-balance organ filled with fat, not muscle, that shifts mid-jump to steer the animal through air like an aircraft rudder. It wakes every few days to nibble seeds buried in its burrow, then slips back into the cold.
