• Male Great Eggflies are masters of visual deception—they have evolved fake eyespots on their wings that perfectly mimic the head of a much larger predator. When a bird strikes from above, it attacks the wrong end of the butterfly, giving the eggfly precious seconds to escape with only a wing tip bitten instead of its body. This switch alone—from true eyes to false ones—likely costs the male mating success with females, yet he keeps them anyway because surviving to breed beats dying at peak fitness.
• The Great Eggfly caterpillar will starve rather than eat any leaf except passionflower—a plant so toxic that humans can't safely consume it. Over millions of years, the caterpillar's body evolved to not just survive the plant's poisons but to steal them, storing them in its own tissues as a chemical shield against predators. It's betting everything on a single plant family, a gamble that makes each eggfly caterpillar a living archive of evolutionary specialisation.
• Females come in at least three colour morphs, and some mimic poisonous butterfly species entirely—black wings, white patches, the works. A male eggfly will court any black-and-white female he sees, even if she's a different species, because the deception works so well. Evolution hasn't yet sorted out how to tell a true mate from a convincing fake when the imposters are flying right next to her.
• The Great Eggfly's caterpillar can shift into a defensive posture that makes it swell up to twice its normal size, creating the illusion of a much larger, more dangerous prey item. It also curls into a tight spiral and drops from the leaf when disturbed—a behaviour that forces predators to start hunting all over again from the forest floor. These movements are instinctive and split-second, requiring no learning or decision.
• Males gather in groups of dozens on wet sand and mud in the rainforest, absorbing minerals and salts in a behaviour called puddling. They'll stay in one spot for hours, wings spread wide to catch the light, creating a shimmering congregation that's visible from metres away. These mineral stations are rare and valuable; males queue and wait because those salts make sperm packets larger and more competitive, directly raising the odds their offspring will survive.
