• The gray sac-winged bat bears a distinctive sac on the membrane that links its wrist to its neck, and this sac sits exactly in the centre of the forearm membrane, a placement not seen in its relatives. In males the sac is far more prominent and developed than in females, creating a clear sexual contrast. The sac also has a proximal opening, which varies in colour and texture with age and season, adding to its unique appearance.
• Gray sac-winged bats form large, sociable colonies that usually contain at least fifty individuals, but some roosts have been reported to hold as many as ten thousand bats. Within these groups roughly a quarter are females and three quarters are males, a ratio that can shift with the dry season when more males join the colony.
• The tail of the gray sac-winged bat is largely enclosed by a membrane that stretches between its ankles, a common trait of the Emballonuridae family, leaving only the tip exposed. This exposed tip projects just about six millimetres beyond the surrounding sheath, giving the bat its characteristic sheath-tail appearance.
• Gray sac-winged bats begin their hunt a little before sunset, taking to the air while still in dim light. They travel over open spaces that can be several kilometres from their roosts, searching for insects in groups or alone. During these forays the males have been measured at about 9.76 km/h and the females at roughly 9.14 km/h, both speeds described as relatively slow.
• About four percent of gray sac-winged bats carry extra teeth, a condition known as supernumerary teeth, and these additional teeth are found mainly among the incisors.
