• A gray hawk can spot a 10-centimetre lizard from 300 metres away, then dive at 160 kilometres per hour and snatch it mid-stride without breaking its stride. Their eyes see four times sharper than human vision, and they can track movement at wavelengths we can't even perceive. This turns every open field into a hunting ground no reptile can hide in.
• Gray hawks hunt in pairs, one flushing prey toward the other like a practiced tag team. The second hawk waits silently on a perch, watching for the moment the lizard bolts — then springs the trap. This coordinated ambush works so well that a single gray hawk hunting alone catches half as many snakes and lizards as a pair does.
• When a gray hawk chick hatches, only one survives. The first chick to hatch pecks the second one to death within days — a behaviour called cainism. The mother doesn't intervene.
