- When a threat appears the gray four-eyed opossum does not resort to the classic "play dead" act of its North American cousin. Instead it confronts predators such as Amazon tree boas and South American bushmasters, opening its mouth wide and hissing loudly. This aggressive response is reinforced by its reputation as the fiercest fighter among opossums, and it may even be active during daylight hours despite being nocturnal.
- Among opossums the gray four-eyed species is regarded as the fiercest fighter, meeting predators with open-mouth hisses and swift attacks. It will confront snakes, boas and other carnivores, using its powerful bite and vocal threat displays.
- The gray four-eyed opossum's diet includes venomous snakes, yet bites that would cripple most animals are harmless to it because its serum contains toxin-neutralising proteins. These proteins are produced before any encounter, meaning the immunity is inherited rather than learned. This biochemical defence lets the opossum safely consume dangerous prey and thrive in its varied rainforest habitat.
- Wild individuals weigh between 200 and 674 g, while those kept in captivity can grow as heavy as 1.5 kg. Adults measure 22.0-33.1 cm in body length, and their prehensile tails add another 19.5-35.5 cm, giving them a total length comparable to their weight range. This size variation reflects the species' ability to thrive in both undisturbed forest and more altered habitats across its low-land range.
- The gray four-eyed opossum's gestation lasts only 13 to 14 days, after which the newborns tip the scales at about 9 g. The tiny young remain in the mother's pouch for 68-75 days, nursing continuously before emerging. After leaving the pouch they stay in the nest for a further 8-15 days, at which point the mother becomes aggressive and drives them away to become independent.
