Giant Mudskipper (Periophthalmodon schlosseri) lives in intertidal mudflats across Southeast Asia. It feeds on small crabs and fish. Its conservation status is Least Concern.
The giant mudskipper (Periophthalmodon schlosseri) commands attention on the muddy shores of the eastern Indian Ocean and western Pacific, where its yellow-greenish brown body, speckled with light blue, can flash a stark black horizontal stripe from eye to caudal peduncle when alarmed. Males reach up to 27.5 cm TL and females slightly larger at 28.5 cm, making it the largest of its mudskipping kin. It lives in J- or U-shaped burrows perched on higher intertidal ground, chambers that hold both water and air, allowing the fish to retreat during high tide and to stockpile oxygen for its brood. By using its pectoral fins to “walk” and its fused pelvic fins to cling, it darts across mud, leaping with a caudal-fin thrust to ambush crabs, fish, insects or worms, then traps prey with a swift tail flick before swallowing it with a gulp of water. A surprising trait is its dense capillary network atop the head’s micro-ridges, which, together with a highly vascularised buccal cavity, lets the mudskipper respire through skin and mouth, a dual system that sustains its obligate air-breathing lifestyle even while submerged for seconds at a time. During low tide, males dominate the shoreline, feeding on small crabs, while females, especially in spawning season, linger near the water’s edge to snatch tiny fish. Their territorial aggression, mouth gaping, fin raising, pigment darkening, keeps rivals at bay, yet they are solitary, only meeting for monogamous courtship. After the female deposits eggs on the burrow walls, the male assumes sole guardianship, repeatedly inflating his buccal cavity to inject fresh air into the hypoxic chamber, a ritual that underscores the mudskipper’s remarkable adaptation to life between land and sea, a balance that is constantly tested by the shifting tides and the ever-changing environment
