- At just 225-240 mm long, Geoffroy's tamarin is the smallest Central American monkey, dwarfing most of its relatives. Its tail adds another 314-386 mm, giving it a long, balancing whip. Males tip the scales at an average 486 g, while females are slightly heavier at 507 g. Such a tiny body lets the tamarin slip through thin branches that larger primates cannot, opening niche feeding and travel routes that reduce competition and predation risk.
- Geoffroy's tamarins are opportunistic eaters: one study found their meals 40% insects, 38% fruit, 14% exudates from cashew trees and 8% other items. A different Barro Colorado Island survey reported 60% fruit, 30% insects and 10% green plant parts, especially sap from elephant-ear trees. These shifting percentages reveal a flexible diet.
- Females carry a single infant or twins after a gestation of roughly 145 days, and the newborns weigh just 40-50 g. Males step in heavily, carrying and grooming the babies more than females, while older siblings may also help. Reaching sexual maturity at about two years, individuals can live up to 13 years. predators like jaguarundis and hawks lurk.
- Population density swings dramatically: on Barro Colorado Island tamarins number 3.6-5.7 per km², yet in other locales they can reach 20-30 per km². Despite this adaptability, the IUCN lists the species as near-threatened, mainly because deforestation shrinks their forest homes.
- A single tamarin covers about 2 km each day, roaming an average of 2 061 meters. Its home range stretches from 9.4 to 32 hectares.
