• A leaf-tailed gecko's tail is a perfect forgery—not just camouflaged, but structurally identical to a dead leaf, complete with a central vein and side ribs that cast shadows matching real foliage. If a predator snaps it off, the tail detaches cleanly and keeps twitching on the ground while the gecko escapes. It will regrow the tail within months, but the replacement never quite matches the original—a scar in the armor that marks every escape.
• These geckos climb vertical rainforest trunks using millions of microscopic hair-like structures called setae, each one 200 nanometres wide—thinner than a bacterium. The hairs create weak molecular bonds with any surface, allowing a 4-gram gecko to support 40 times its body weight while hanging upside down.
