Clouded Monitor

Fascinating facts about the Clouded Monitor

• The survey of Ko Pha-ngan listed the clouded monitor as the sole lizard classified as Near Threatened on the IUCN Red List, highlighting that even common-looking reptiles can slip toward risk without close monitoring. This status warns conservationists that habitat restriction on islands can quickly push a species from safety to concern.
• Despite its Near-Threatened tag in the Thai island study, exposing a gap between global evaluations and local realities. Such mismatches can delay protective actions where the species actually faces island-specific pressures, underscoring the need for region-focused assessments.
• The national park on Ko Pha-ngan is described as increasingly vital for the clouded monitor because the island's limited land area forces all its reptiles into a confined space. Protecting this forested refuge helps maintain the monitor's population.
• On Ko Pha-ngan, the clouded monitor was spotted in every surveyed environment, pristine national-park forest, human-disturbed woodland and even village settlements. Being present in all three habitats.
