• When a frilled-necked lizard feels threatened, it unfurls a disc of skin around its neck that can expand to twice the width of its own body, a bluff so convincing that most predators retreat without testing whether the lizard can actually fight. The frill is supported by cartilage rods connected to its jaw, meaning it hisses and gapes its bright pink mouth at the same moment the collar flares. It's pure theatre, and it works.
• The frilled-necked lizard runs on its hind legs at speeds up to 30 kilometres per hour, a gait so unstable that it looks like it's sprinting on the edge of toppling forward. This bipedal escape works because their lightweight bodies and long tails, which act as a counterbalance, let them accelerate faster than a predator can strike. The trade-off: they tire quickly and must climb a tree or disappear into leaf litter within seconds.
• Unlike most reptiles, frilled-necked lizards are primarily active during the day in the New Guinea Highlands, where temperatures stay cool and stable, an unusual choice in a family of creatures that mostly hunt at dusk or in darkness. This diurnal habit means they rely on vision and colour more than their heat-sensing pit organs, and their striking orange and yellow throat patches likely serve as species recognition signals in dim forest light.
• A frilled-necked lizard's teeth are ankylosed, permanently fused to the bone of its jaw, which means they never shed them and cannot replace broken or worn teeth. Instead of biting hard, they use quick, snapping strikes designed to pin insects and small leaves to the roof of their mouth before swallowing. This dental strategy limits what they can eat but makes them efficient at their actual prey: termites, beetles, and soft vegetation.
