• A male flame skimmer's scarlet body is not camouflage — it's a warning flag to other males that this patch of water is occupied. He'll patrol the same 10-metre stretch of pond or stream all summer, attacking any red insect that enters his territory, sometimes including his own reflection. Females, by contrast, are dull yellow and fly low and fast to avoid male harassment, visiting the water only to lay eggs. The colour difference is so stark that researchers once thought they were different species.
• Flame skimmer nymphs spend 1 to 2 years underwater hunting tadpoles and small fish larvae with a hydraulic jaw that extends in 16 milliseconds — faster than you can blink. The jaw is spring-loaded like a mousetrap; the nymph doesn't chase prey, it sits motionless and waits for movement, then fires. Over its aquatic childhood it moults 12 times, growing from a speck to a creature the size of your thumb.
• In flight, a flame skimmer can hover, fly backwards, and accelerate from 0 to top speed in under a second — abilities that come from four independent wing motors. Each wing moves separately with up to 40 wing beats per second, giving the dragonfly the aerial precision of a helicopter that can hunt mid-air insects while barely using energy. A single flame skimmer can catch 100 mosquitoes in a day.
• The flame skimmer's compound eyes see ultraviolet, visible, and polarised light at the same time, giving it a sensory world humans cannot imagine. It can detect movement 300 times faster than a human can, and each eye has 28,000 lenses pointing in different directions — there are blind spots behind its head and below its body, but nowhere else. This is why it hunts so effectively that it sometimes eats its own weight in prey daily.
• Flame skimmers emerged as a dragonfly family roughly 300 million years ago, before dinosaurs walked the Earth, and their body plan has barely changed since the Carboniferous period. They survived the asteroid that killed the dinosaurs 66 million years ago, the ice ages, and the rise of birds that hunt them today.
