- When kept in captivity and fed the standard grain diet for laboratory rodents, fat sand rats quickly become overweight and show clear signs of metabolic disease. Their bodies accumulate excess fat within weeks, and they develop symptoms that closely match type 2 diabetes in humans. This reaction is absent when they eat their natural vegetable-based diet, on which they stay lean.
- Fat sand rats obtain virtually all of their hydration by eating the leaves of desert plants that contain high water content, such as Atriplex halimus. By ingesting this pre-formed water they avoid the need to seek out free-standing sources like puddles or wells. This strategy allows them to survive in arid habitats where liquid water is scarce. Their reliance on plant moisture also means they can remain active throughout the day without frequent drinking breaks.
- When placed in an unfamiliar arena, a fat sand rat tends to walk straight along the perimeter rather than looping around a central area. This perimeter-patrolling behaviour is described as moving in straight lines along the border of an environment, which differs from the typical home-base exploration seen in most rodents. The pattern is consistent across individuals and is especially noticeable during initial exploration.
