Fascinating facts about the Evergreen Bagworm Moth

• The bagworm moth caterpillar builds a silk sleeping bag around itself — then never leaves it. Over 60 days, it adds leaves, twigs, and bits of plant to the outside of its portable fortress, creating a cone up to 4 cm long that looks like a tiny Christmas ornament hanging from a branch. When the caterpillar turns into a moth, the males fly away to find mates, but the females never leave the bag at all — they lay eggs inside it, then die. Their whole adult life happens inside a silk cocoon.
• In bagworm colonies, females have completely erased their wings, legs, and eyes — their bodies are basically just eggs with a brain. Males develop wings and fly, but females stay as maggot-like creatures that never walk or see. This extreme difference between male and female in the same species (called sexual dimorphism) is so extreme that scientists initially thought they were two different insects entirely.
• Bagworm outbreaks can strip entire forests bare in a single summer. A tree infested with hundreds of caterpillars loses every leaf within weeks, leaving it standing dead while surrounded by trees still in full leaf. The damage can kill stressed trees outright, and severe defoliation spreads through neighbourhoods fast — one infested landscape can seed the next one 5 years later as populations rebuild.
• Male bagworm moths have a 3-week window to find a mate before they die — and they do it with almost no navigation tools. They can't eat (they have no mouth), they're clumsy fliers compared to other moths, and they're searching for a stationary female who is literally just an egg-filled sac hanging in a tree. Their only advantage is a powerful sense of smell that can detect a female's pheromone from hundreds of metres away in darkness.
• Unlike most bagworm moths, the evergreen bagworm eats deciduous leaves — a risky choice in a family famous for feeding on conifers. In spring, they switch from dead leaves stuck to their bags (their winter camouflage) to fresh oak, maple, and birch foliage. This dietary flexibility lets them thrive across eastern North America's mixed forests, but it also means they can become serious pests in suburban neighbourhoods where ornamental trees concentrate.
