- The European roller is the only roller species that breeds in Europe, making it the sole Coraciidae member to do so. Its distribution stretches beyond the continent into the Maghreb, West Asia and Central Asia, giving it a broad but warm-adapted range. Within this range it occupies many habitat types yet deliberately steers clear of treeless plains, preferring areas with scattered trees.
- When threatened, a European roller chick expels a foul-smelling orange liquid onto its own body as a defensive measure. This odorous secretion not only deters the attacking predator but also serves a communicative function, alerting the returning parents that danger has been encountered at the nest. The dual purpose of the fluid therefore both protects the vulnerable chick and warns the adult birds, prompting them to respond appropriately to the threat.
- Ring-recovery data indicate that the longest-lived European roller reached an age of nine years and two months, setting the species' recorded lifespan ceiling. This individual was a bird that had been shot in Poland, providing the definitive age record for the species. Such longevity, though rare, demonstrates that European rollers can survive well beyond the typical breeding years when conditions allow.
- One European roller was recorded colliding with an aircraft over the Arabian Sea, an unusual hazard of its long migrations. The species undertakes extensive journeys, with some western populations passing through western India between August and November before reaching African wintering grounds.
- The European breeding population fell by a quarter between 1990 and 2000, a steep drop that contributed to its earlier near-threatened status. In 2005 the IUCN listed the roller as near threatened, but by 2015 it was down-listed to least concern because the overall decline did not meet the thresholds for a higher risk category.
