• A herring gull can drink seawater and excrete salt through specialized glands in its head—essentially equipped with built-in desalination. Most birds die if they drink saltwater, but these gulls have a supraorbital gland that filters sodium and chloride out of their bloodstream and dumps it straight back into the ocean. It's why they thrive on cliffs where freshwater is scarce.
