- European eels normally live about fifteen to twenty years in the wild, though some captive individuals have survived beyond eighty years. An extraordinary example is the Brantevik eel, which reached an age of one hundred and fifty-five years. It spent that time hidden in the well of a family home in the fishing village of Brantevik, southern Sweden, far outlasting the usual lifespan of its species.
- The European eel is listed as critically endangered, a status driven by a dramatic collapse in its numbers. Surveys indicate that the amount of eels arriving in Europe has dropped by around ninety percent, and some estimates push the decline to as much as ninety-eight percent since the 1970s. This steep reduction underpins the urgent conservation concerns surrounding the species.
- Hydroelectric dams pose a severe threat to European eel populations, cutting off their migratory routes. Over an eighty-year monitoring period, rivers equipped with large dams saw almost twice the reduction in eel numbers compared with dam-free rivers. Such barriers have been shown to have a significant negative impact on eel populations, accelerating their decline.
- European eel larvae are born in the Sargasso Sea and then spend about 300 days drifting across the Atlantic before they reach European waters. During this long oceanic passage the leptocephalus larvae are carried by currents toward the continent. When they arrive they metamorphose into the transparent "glass eel" stage and enter estuaries, beginning the next phase of their life cycle. This extended migration is a defining part of the eel's mysterious development.
