Fascinating facts about the European Bison
- A single European bison can stretch up to 3.3 m (10.8 ft) long, stand 2.1 m (6.9 ft) tall at the shoulder, and tip the scales at 920 kg (2,028 lb) for males, about the weight of a small car. Occasionally a bull hits the 1,000 kg (2,200 lb) mark, with historic records of a lowland male at 1,900 kg (4,200 lb). These dimensions make it the heaviest wild land animal in Europe.
- By the late 2010s the European bison population had climbed to several thousand individuals, a dramatic rebound from the 48 survivors locked in zoos in 1927. In 1996 the IUCN listed the reintroduced herd as endangered, but the status later improved to vulnerable and now near-threatened. Poland alone counted 1,434 bison in 2014, with 1,212 roaming free, and the national herd doubled between 1995 and 2017, reaching 2,269 by the end of 2019. This recovery shows how intensive captive-breeding and cross-border reintroductions can pull a species back from the brink.
- All modern European bison trace back to just 12 founders, a genetic bottleneck that left the species highly inbred. This limited gene pool reduces reproductive rates, hampers skeletal growth, and weakens immune defenses, making the herd vulnerable to disease outbreaks. Understanding this bottleneck highlights why genetic management remains essential for the species' long-term viability.
- European bison act as living seed-dispersal machines, moving the seeds of roughly 178 vascular plant species across forest landscapes. By ingesting fruits and later excreting viable seeds far from the parent plant, they help maintain plant diversity.
- Adult male bison roam huge territories: bulls aged 5-6 years cover about 44 km², while older bulls expand to roughly 84 km², and forest-dwelling bulls can claim up to 151.6 km². Female home ranges top out near 100 km².
