Fascinating facts about the European Bison

• In 1927, every European bison on Earth was dead. Hunters and habitat loss had erased them completely — until Soviet scientists found 12 survivors in zoos and private collections across Europe and bred them back. Today roughly 8,000 live wild, all descended from those 12 animals, making them one of conservation's most dramatic resurrections.
• A European bison weighs up to 920 kg — heavier than a grand piano — yet can sprint at 55 km/h and leap 1.8 metres vertically. That's a creature the size of a delivery truck with the acceleration of a racehorse, built to crash through dense forest where a North American bison would be useless.
• Unlike their American cousins, European bison are forest engineers: they strip bark from trees, trample saplings, and create glades through old-growth woodland. In Poland's Białowieża Forest, their grazing habits are so significant that conservationists now manage bison numbers to shape entire ecosystems — the animals themselves become a management tool.
• A European bison's coat thickens so dramatically in winter that it can look twice the size it was in summer, ballooning with dense underfur that insulates against temperatures dropping to −30°C. By spring they shed this coat in massive patches, creating a transformation so extreme they're almost unrecognisable week to week.
• European bison live in matriarchal herds led by the oldest female, who remembers where to find food and water during harsh winters — knowledge passed down for decades. When conservationists relocated a herd to new forests, the matriarch's memory of seasonal grazing routes became more valuable than any GPS tracker.
