Fascinating facts about the European Badger

• A badger's front claws are longer than a grizzly bear's relative to body size — curved scythes built for excavating soil at speeds that would exhaust a human with a spade. In a single night, a badger can dig a burrow system (called a sett) stretching over 300 metres through dense earth, with multiple entrances, chambers, and sleeping quarters lined with dry grass. These underground mansions are so well-engineered they stay dry in winter and cool in summer, and some are reused by badger families for over a century.
• Badgers eat roughly 200 earthworms per night — enough to fill a dinner plate — which means they must forage for 8 to 10 hours every evening just to meet their caloric needs. Their snout is a precision instrument: they can smell an earthworm 15 centimetres underground, and their hearing is so acute they can locate prey moving through soil by sound alone. Earthworms make up 50 to 90 per cent of their diet depending on the season, making badgers the gardener's unlikely ally against soil pest explosions.
• A badger's skeleton is built like a bear trap: their ribcage is specially flattened (wider side-to-side, narrower front-to-back) so they can compress their entire body to squeeze through burrow systems barely wider than their shoulders. Predators that grab a badger from above find their prey can rotate and twist inside a predator's jaws far more than any mammal of similar size — a survival trick that has let badgers fend off wolves, lynx, and golden eagles for millions of years.
• Badgers are one of the few European carnivores with no natural predators as adults, yet they face more legal killing than any other wild mammal in the UK — over 40,000 per year, mostly due to cattle tuberculosis control programmes. The science is contentious: badgers carry the disease, but studies show culling spreads TB further by disrupting sett territories and forcing infected animals to roam wider. Conservation officials now test badgers before removal rather than kill entire populations.
• A badger's winter strategy is not true hibernation but something called torpor — their body temperature drops only slightly, and they stay in their sett living off stored fat for weeks, sometimes months. But they don't sleep through winter: on milder nights (above 4°C) they wake, forage briefly for earthworms, and return to their chambers. This half-asleep survival mode is why a warm winter can leave a badger dangerously weak by spring, unable to find enough awakened prey to rebuild their fat reserves.
