• A Eurasian treecreeper spirals up a tree trunk in a single direction — always clockwise or always counter-clockwise, never switching — as if following an invisible spiral staircase. This rigid pattern lets their 12 stiff tail feathers (shaped like a woodpecker's) brace perfectly against the bark with zero wasted movement. They climb faster than most birds can walk on flat ground, yet their tiny feet grip so hard that a dead treecreeper found in winter might still cling to bark weeks after freezing.
• With a bill curved like a sickle and a tongue that extends twice the length of its head, a treecreeper probes deep into bark crevices where even woodpeckers can't reach — fishing out insects smaller than a grain of rice. A single bird can inspect 1,500 crevices in one morning. That specialised mouth is so finely tuned it's useless anywhere except bark, locking the treecreeper into a life strategy with no backup plan.
