Across its range, about half of adult nuthatches survive each year (≈51 % annual survival), but juveniles fare worse, with only a 25 % local survival rate in a Belgian study. The species typically lives two years, yet the oldest recorded wild individual reached 12 years 11 months in the UK, and a Swiss bird lived 10 years 6 months.
Unlike most birds, the nuthatch can walk down a trunk head-first, scanning bark for hidden prey. This unique foraging style lets it exploit insects and larvae that cling to vertical surfaces, accessing food sources unavailable to birds that only climb upward. By combining head-first descent with its strong, pointed bill, the nuthatch can pry bark and smash nuts in place.
At just 14 cm long with a 22.5-27 cm wingspan, the Eurasian nuthatch packs a punch at only 17-28 g. This tiny, blue-gray bird darts across bark without using its tail for support, relying on short, powerful leaps.
A single breeding pair can lay up to nine red-speckled white eggs, each about 19.5 mm × 14.4 mm and weighing 2.3 g. The female incubates them for 13-18 days, then feeds the altricial chicks until they fledge after another 20-26 days.
Territory size swells dramatically from west to east: European pairs defend 2-10 ha (5-25 acres), while Siberian birds need an average of 30.2 ha (75 acres) in sub-optimal conifer forests.
