• A ring of 19 salamander populations circles the Californian mountains, each able to breed with its neighbours. The complex population forms a horseshoe shape around the mountains, allowing interbreeding between adjacent groups. However, the subspecies on the western end cannot interbreed with the Ensatina klauberi on the eastern end, illustrating incipient speciation. This pattern provides an illustration of nearly all stages in a speciation process.
• The Monterey ensatina is the only subspecies with a tail that narrows at the base and five toes on each hind foot. Adults reach just 3-5 in (7.6-12.7 cm) from head to tail, making them relatively small salamanders. Males often have longer tails than females, and many individuals show lighter-coloured limbs compared with the rest of the body. These physical traits help distinguish it from the other subspecies across its range.
• Females lay three eggs underground, and the hatchlings emerge as fully formed salamanders, skipping any aquatic larval stage. The young are miniature copies of the adults, allowing them to begin life on land immediately. This direct development means the species does not need standing water for reproduction, which fits their habit of living under logs, brush, or near moist streams. Their reliance on cutaneous respiration makes careful handling essential.
• Ensatina salamanders inhabit the cooler, moist zones of conifer forests and oak woodlands that dominate the mountains between 520 m and 2400 m elevation. Within these habitats they shelter beneath logs, brush, and near streams or lakes where humidity stays high. Their lung-less physiology forces them to breathe through their skin, so the constant moisture of these forests is essential for gas exchange.
• Because they respire through their skin, warm or dry contact quickly stresses them, making careless handling harmful. Their thin skin is especially vulnerable to heat, drying and chemicals.
