• An emu can sprint at 50 km/h on legs so powerful they've been clocked delivering 425 newtons of force per stride — enough to shatter bones if the bird decides you're a threat. Those legs are built for crossing Australia's vast interior, where an emu thinks nothing of walking 25 kilometres in a single day to find food. A tendon system in each leg acts like a spring, recycling energy with every bound across open ground.
• Emus are one of only two bird species on Earth where the male, not the female, raises the young — and he does it alone for eight weeks without eating, drinking, or leaving the nest. A breeding male will lose up to one-third of his body weight during this fast, living entirely on stored fat while he incubates up to 12 eggs and later shepherds the chicks. If a predator approaches, he'll charge with wings spread and deliver kicks that can break a dingo's ribs.
• At night, an emu's eye reflects light like a cat's because of a mirror-like layer behind the retina called the tapetum lucidum — making them one of the few Australian birds with excellent low-light vision. This adaptation lets them forage through twilight and darkness, giving them access to food sources other large birds can't exploit. Their vision is so sensitive to movement that a predator's silhouette triggers alarm from over 400 metres away.
• Emus swallow stones the size of marbles and keep them in their gizzard, where these rocks grind plant material and seeds into digestible pulp — a living mortar and pestle that lets them break down tough vegetation most animals cannot. This behaviour means they can fuel their massive, active bodies on food that would starve a kangaroo. A single emu's gizzard can contain up to 600 grams of stones at any given time.
• During the 1932 'Great Emu War', the Australian military deployed soldiers with machine guns to cull emus destroying wheat crops in Western Australia — and the birds won. Emus scattered at gunfire, regrouped, and continued eating; soldiers fired thousands of rounds with almost no effect. The military withdrew after three weeks, the emus survived, and the government quietly increased bounty payments to farmers instead. It remains history's most famous loss of a military campaign against wildlife.
