The toxin is a neurotoxin and the strongest known emetic. This chemical armor lets the newt survive in ponds crowded with hungry fish, turning a tiny salamander into a living deterrent for its own protection.
• Only about two out of every hundred larvae survive to become the bright-colored eft, because the larval stage lasts just 2 to 5 months and faces heavy predation.
