Today they survive because of a fenced ark the size of a golf course.
• The eastern barred bandicoot's closest living relative is the long-nosed bandicoot of rainforests — but genetic evidence shows the two species diverged only 5 to 7 million years ago, long after Australia's grasslands evolved. This animal is a rainforest creature trapped in a habitat it never evolved to dominate, and now that habitat is shrinking faster than it can adapt.
