Dwarf whipray

Fascinating facts about the Dwarf whipray

• The dwarf whipray inhabits shallow coastal zones, never venturing deeper than about 25 to 50 metres. It lives on the sea floor, classifying it as a demersal species that prefers inshore and brackish environments. These depth limits keep it within the continental shelf where it can find its preferred soft-sediment habitats. Its distribution across the Indo-Malay Archipelago means it is regularly encountered by local fishers operating in these shallow waters.
• In Indonesian markets the dwarf whipray is one of the most frequently caught small rays, making it a staple of local catches. Its abundance in catches has led communities to prize it as a culinary delicacy, often prepared fresh. The high demand drives regular fishing effort, especially in coastal fisheries where the species is readily available. Consequently, its presence on plates reflects both its commonality and cultural value.
• Female dwarf whiprays reach a maximum disc width of roughly 24 cm, which is the largest size recorded for the sex. This modest size limits their mobility but allows them to exploit narrow crevices and soft substrates in shallow waters. Their small stature also makes them especially vulnerable to trawl nets that operate in the same depth range. The recorded maximum provides a clear benchmark for identifying mature females in the field.
• The dwarf whipray can be recognised by its smooth tail, which lacks the skin folds that many other rays possess. This absence of folds is listed among its key identification features alongside an oval disc and a broad pointed snout. Because the tail is unadorned, observers can quickly separate it from relatives that display folded skin. The plain-coloured dorsal surface and rounded pectoral-fin apex further reinforce its distinctive look.
• Trawlers operating in the Malacca Strait and Sunda Strait frequently capture dwarf whiprays, putting the species under direct pressure. The ray is prized as a local delicacy, especially in Indonesia, which fuels targeted fishing in these waters. Its status as one of the most common small rays caught in the region means that commercial nets often encounter it. Consequently, these fisheries represent a clear threat to its continued abundance.
