• Driver ant colonies can swell to over 20 million individuals, dwarfing most ant societies. When food supplies dwindle the workers abandon their hill and organise into marching columns that can contain up to 20 million ants, moving only about 20 metres each hour. The same colonies also build temporary subterranean bivouacs, excavating chambers that they occupy for a few days or as long as three months.
• The queens of driver ants are the largest living ants, measuring between 40 mm and 63 mm in total length depending on their physiological condition. They have an extraordinary reproductive capacity, laying several million eggs each month, and each colony contains only a single queen; when she dies the workers may attempt to join another colony rather than produce a new queen.
• Male driver ants are nicknamed "sausage flies" because of their bloated, sausage-shaped abdomens, making them among the largest ant morphs. After hatching they leave the nest quickly, drawn to the scent trail of a marching column once they reach sexual maturity. When a column encounters a male, the workers tear off his wings and carry him back to the nest for mating, after which the male dies shortly thereafter.
• In East African communities such as the Maasai, soldiers of driver ants are harvested to close deep lacerations. The soldiers bite the wound on opposite sides and their bodies are snapped off, leaving the powerful mandibles to clamp the tissue, creating a seal that can remain intact for several days and can be reapplied if needed.
• When the colony's food stores dwindle, driver ants abandon their nest and organise into massive marching columns that can contain up to twenty million individuals. Although the swarms pose a serious hazard to people who cannot move out of their path, the procession advances at only about twenty metres per hour, meaning it can be outrun or simply avoided. Their coordinated movement also includes larger soldiers protecting the smaller workers as they travel.
