Fascinating facts about the Buffy-tufted-ear Marmoset
It lives farther south than any other marmoset, occupying the Atlantic coast forests of southeast Brazil. The species is endemic to the Atlantic Forest of southern Brazil and is found in ombrophilous and semideciduous forests of the Serras do Mar and Mantiqueira ranges. This distribution places it at the southernmost limit of the entire Callithrix genus, a unique biogeographic record for the group.
Weighing 400-450 g and measuring 19-25 cm in body length with a 27-35 cm tail, it is probably the largest member of Callithrix. Its greater mass and longer tail give it a more robust build than its smaller relatives. These dimensions allow it to move confidently through the lower canopy and dense understorey where it forages, a niche that benefits from its size.
Every birth yields twins after a precise 144-day gestation, and the newborns cling to their parents for the first weeks. The species lives in groups of 4-8 individuals, usually with a single reproductive pair and a dominant female. Older siblings help care for the infants, and once they reach adulthood they disperse to form new breeding pairs, maintaining group cohesion.
Beyond fruit and gum, the buffy-tufted marmoset also incorporates bamboo fungi into its diet, expanding its foraging options in the forest understory. This addition complements its consumption of plant secretions such as resins, as well as fruits and tree gum.
The buffy-tufted marmoset can share its forest home with capuchin monkeys of the genus Cebus and titi monkeys of the genus Callicebus, forming mixed-species groups in the Atlantic Forest. Such sympatry is unusual for Callithrix, as there are no records of it co-occurring with any other Callithrix species.
