Fascinating facts about the Dark-Branded Bushbrown
- In the wet season the dark-branded bushbrown's forewing bears one prominent black eye-spot that has a white centre and a fulvous ring. This ocellus is usually placed in a square pale patch in interspace 2, while a much smaller, un-surrounded spot can sometimes appear in interspace 5. The surrounding pale area makes the mark stand out against the dark Vandyke-brown ground colour of the wing. This pattern is part of the wet-season form described for the species.
- On the hindwing of the dark-branded bushbrown the posterior four eye-spots are arranged in a straight line, a distinctive feature of this species. This alignment contrasts with the related Mycalesis perseus, which shows only three ocelli in the same region.
- During the dry season the underside of the dark-branded bushbrown varies from ochraceous brown to a darker dusky brown, with the basal half of each wing noticeably darker than the outer portions. The whole wing surface is irrorated, or sprinkled, with fine brown striae that give it a textured appearance. Occasionally a distinct dark discal band crosses both wings, adding a further contrast to the pattern.
- The male possesses a sex-mark of form 1, matching that of Mycalesis perseus. However, the specialised scale patch on the underside of its forewing is only half as large again.
- During the wet season the underside displays a transverse dusky-white discal band that is sharply defined on the inner side and fades outward. Beyond it lies a series of ocelli each encircled by a dusky-yellowish, occasionally purplish-white line.
