• Black-dotted maliattha flies under the radar of most people, yet it belongs to the huge owlet moth family Noctuidae. First described in 1868 by entomologists Augustus Radcliffe Grote and Coleman Townsend Robinson, this moth has been catalogued in the North American moth checklist as number 9049, the MONA or Hodges identifier that lets researchers instantly locate its records.
• When scientists set out to catch moths in a suburban woodlot in the summer of 2015, the classic mercury-vapor light trap hauled in an average of 78 moth individuals per night, while a cheap LED funnel trap only netted about 40 per night. That 2-fold difference shows how powerful traditional ultraviolet sources are at drawing night insects, but also highlights the trade-off: the LED system costs less than $30 each, making large-scale surveys possible where budgets or battery weight would otherwise limit effort.
• In the same 2015 field test, the mercury-vapor trap recorded 23 different moth species each night, whereas the LED funnel trap captured only 15. Over ten nights the mercury system logged a total of 104 macromoth species, while the LED version logged 87.
• Long-term studies in New York have shown that warming climates can push moth flight periods earlier by 0.55 days per decade and extend them by 1.18 days per decade, especially for species that can add extra generations each year.
