• A creature that shouldn't exist in the Sahara survives by reversing its entire body clock. The dama gazelle is nocturnal in summer — awake all night, asleep all day — then flips to daytime activity in winter. This metabolic switcheroo lets it avoid the worst heat while still finding enough grass to eat in one of Earth's harshest places. Few mammals can rewire their circadian rhythm this completely.
• Fewer than 500 dama gazelles remain in the wild today, making them rarer than giant pandas. In the 1970s there were thousands. Drought, poaching for bushmeat, and the expansion of pastoral herds across the Sahel collapsed their populations so fast that some biologists feared they'd vanish entirely by 2000. A handful of conservation breeding programs now hold more dama gazelles than exist in nature.
• Their coat changes colour with the season — rusty-red in summer, pale cream in winter — a trick that helps them shed heat or retain it depending on the month. But more mysteriously, pregnant females grow a dark stripe down their spine that vanishes after they give birth. Scientists still don't fully understand why.
• Unlike most gazelles that graze on grass, dama gazelles are picky eaters that browse leaves and shrubs up to 1.8 metres high — tall enough that they sometimes stand upright on their hind legs like tiny antelopes on stilts. This flexibility let them survive in the scrubby grasslands where herds of zebras and wildebeest couldn't feed, carving out a niche in the margins of the Sahara.
• The dama gazelle's kidneys are architectural marvels of water conservation. They can go weeks without drinking by extracting almost every drop of moisture from plants and recycling their own urine. When rain does fall in the desert, they gather at scattered pools — moments when entire populations collapse into a few oases, making them dangerously vulnerable to poachers waiting nearby.
