• A coyote's howl carries for 3 kilometres across open desert, yet each animal has a signature pitch — like a fingerprint for sound. Researchers can identify individuals by their call alone. When a pack howls together, they deliberately space their voices apart so predators can't count them accurately. What sounds like six coyotes might be three.
• In the last 200 years, coyotes have colonised every corner of North America — from deserts to Canadian forests to New York City subway stations. They're one of the few large carnivores expanding their range while most others shrink. Biologists call them a 'hyperadaptor': they'll eat fruit, garbage, pets, and insects with equal efficiency, shifting diet by season and location.
• A desert coyote's ears are 20% larger relative to body size than a wolf's, designed to dump body heat through blood vessels in the skin. In 50°C heat, a coyote can cool itself by adjusting blood flow, letting its ears act like radiators. This adaptation lets them hunt at midday when prey is exposed and competitors rest.
