At full-grown size a common raven stretches to about 63 cm (25 in) long and weighs around 1.47 kg (3.2 lb), but the biggest birds tip the scales at 2 kg (4.4 lb), making them the heaviest of all passerines. Their wingspan can reach 153 cm (60 in). Even within the species, individuals from icy realms like the Himalayas and Greenland grow larger than their warm-climate cousins.
Genetic studies reveal that today's ravens fall into two deep lineages, a California clade and a Holarctic clade, that began to split roughly two million years ago. Though they look identical, the groups carry distinct mitochondrial DNA, showing they have been evolving separately since the early Pleistocene. The California line is closer to the Chihuahuan raven, while the Holarctic birds share ancestry with the pied crow.
The longest-recorded individual survived 23 years and 3 months in the wild. Captive birds can push even further, with some living beyond 40 years at the Tower of London.
Ravens can perch at the roof of the world, they have been spotted at 5,000 m (16,400 ft) in Tibet and even as high as 6,350 m (20,600 ft) on Mount Everest.
On the Arctic North Slope of Alaska, ravens meet half their daily calories by hunting tiny rodents and the other half by scavenging caribou and ptarmigan carcasses. By caching surplus meat, they create hidden food banks.
