• A butterfly smaller than your thumbnail has colonised every tropical forest on two continents — and does it by drinking from flowers while flying at full speed, never landing. The common leopard's wings beat 12 times per second, fast enough to hover like a hummingbird while its coiled proboscis unfurls into a flower to sip nectar. This acrobatic feeding lets it exploit food sources other insects can't reach, turning it into one of Africa and Asia's most abundant butterflies.
• Males stake territories the size of a tennis court and patrol them obsessively — not to hunt, but to intercept females. A common leopard butterfly can spot another butterfly from 30 metres away using three types of colour vision humans don't have, letting them see ultraviolet patterns on wings that look invisible to us.
