About the Common Coquí

The common coquí (Eleutherodactylus coqui) is a tiny, muddy-brown frog with rust-tan flanks and a light-gray belly, its skin mottled like the forest floor it inhabits. Males measure 30–37 mm and females 36–52 mm, with higher elevations fostering larger individuals. Their sticky toe pads let them cling to wet leaves, bark, or even the walls of homes, yet they lack webbed feet and never swim. By night, the male’s iconic "co-quí" call pierces the humid air, the "co" repelling rivals and the "quí" drawing mates; females and males hear different notes, a rare sex-specific auditory tuning that shapes their breeding territories. These frogs are true habitat generalists, thriving from sea level to 1,200 m across mesic forests, mountains, urban parks, bromeliads, tree holes, and even under trash, with densities that can reach 20,000 individuals per hectare in their native Puerto Rico. Their diet shifts with size, juveniles snatch ants, while adults sit-and-wait for spiders, moths, crickets, snails, and even small frogs, consuming up to 114,000 invertebrates per hectare each night. A surprising trait emerges from a 25-year study of 9,950 frogs: the coquí exhibits 21 distinct color-pattern morphs that fluctuate with habitat disturbances like Hurricane Hugo, suggesting rapid, predator-driven evolution that keeps the population visually cryptic across grasslands and forests.
