• At just 350 grams, Collins' squirrel monkeys are small enough to fit in your palm — yet they live in troops of up to 500 individuals, making them one of the most densely packed primate societies on Earth. A single troop can contain more monkeys than people in many small villages, moving through the canopy as a shimmering wave of fur and tails.
• Their brain-to-body ratio is among the largest of any monkey species, and they use that processing power for a social strategy that borders on espionage: they eavesdrop on the alarm calls of other species — capuchins, macaws, snakes — and adjust their behaviour without ever seeing the threat themselves. This makes them elite parasites of other animals' early-warning systems.
• Collins' squirrel monkeys have been observed in the Peruvian Amazon for only a handful of decades; they weren't formally described as a distinct species until 2010, nearly 450 years after Europeans first reached South America. We still don't know their full range or whether isolated populations exist beyond the known regions of Peru and Ecuador.
• Their tail is prehensile but not muscular — instead, it works as a balance beam and flagpole, allowing them to hang from branches using just their legs and arms while their tail signals social mood and location to troop-mates up to 40 metres away in dense forest.
• They eat fruit, insects, and occasionally tree frogs, but their diet shifts seasonally based on what blooms in the rainforest. During lean months they'll hunt actively for insects, spending up to 60% of their day foraging — a survival strategy that ties them tightly to the health of their forest home and makes them a living indicator of rainforest condition.
