Fascinating facts about the Coelacanth

• In 1938, a fisherman off South Africa netted a fish science thought had vanished 66 million years ago — the coelacanth. The creature dangling in his nets belonged to a lineage that survived the asteroid that killed the dinosaurs, then hid in the deep ocean while every other lobe-finned fish either evolved into land animals or went extinct. Today, fewer than 500 mature coelacanths swim in the depths off the Comoros Islands, making them rarer than giant pandas.
• A coelacanth's skull is hinged in the middle, splitting open like a trapdoor when it swallows. This two-part head — unique among living fish — lets it gulp prey whole without dislocating its jaw. The mechanism is so specialized that scientists still argue about how it actually works, since no other modern fish do anything like it.
• Their fins aren't just flippers — they're built from the same skeletal bones that would eventually evolve into limbs in land vertebrates. • Female coelacanths give birth to live young — but not like most fish. Its body plan is so precisely suited to the deep ocean that evolution has barely touched it — a living test of what 'if it ain't broken, don't fix it' looks like across geologic time. Yet now it faces extinction not from some asteroid, but from fishing nets and climate warming in the span of a human lifetime.
