• Cliff swallows gather in massive breeding colonies that can contain more than two thousand nests. These colonies are built tightly together on cliffs, bridges or other structures, allowing the birds to live in close proximity and exchange extensive vocalisations about food sources and predator warnings.
• Their nests host an unusually large parasite community, including ectoparasites, ticks, fleas and swallow bugs.
