• A male ruddy duck can produce 1,200 bubbles per second by vibrating his tail underwater—a courtship display so rapid it sounds like an outboard motor. The bubbles create a visible trail that female ducks can see from 10 metres away, even in murky water. This is the fastest bubble-production rate of any duck on Earth.
• Ruddy ducks have stiff tail feathers that stick straight up like a tiny fan, but they can fold them flat against their body or jack them vertical in half a second. These 18 feathers act as a rudder in water and an anchor on land. No other duck family has this adaptability.
