• The Christmas frigatebird nests nowhere but Christmas Island, with just four colonies on the whole island. It is an endemic breeder to the island in the Indian Ocean and the only place it ever raises young. Because all breeding occurs in these four sites, the species' entire reproductive range is confined to a single location, making it especially vulnerable to local threats.
• The male inflates a vivid red throat pouch to court a female, a striking display that signals his readiness to mate. In addition to the gular sac, he bears an egg-shaped white patch on his belly, a feature that makes him easy to recognise. The female is slightly larger, with a completely white breast and belly, contrasting with the male's black plumage.
• It measures 89-100 cm in length and carries a wingspan of 205-230 cm, which is about 2.15 m across, giving it a remarkable aerial profile. Despite its large wing area, it is relatively light, weighing around 1 550 g. This combination of size and light weight enables the bird to stay aloft for long periods while searching for surface fish.
• In 2003 only 1,200 breeding pairs were recorded on Christmas Island, the bird's sole breeding ground. Because frigatebirds typically breed only every other year, each pair represents two adults that may not reproduce each season, giving an estimated total adult population of between 3,600 and 7,200 individuals. This small, island-restricted population underpins its Vulnerable IUCN status.
• The Christmas frigatebird hunts by skimming the ocean surface for flying fish, which form the bulk of its diet. When opportunities arise it also practices kleptoparasitism, harassing other seabirds until they regurgitate their catch, a behaviour noted in the species. This dual feeding strategy lets it exploit both active prey and the meals of competitors while staying aloft for long periods.
