• The Christmas frigatebird male inflates a pouch beneath his throat to the size of a basketball — a scarlet balloon that takes 20 minutes to fully expand and can stay inflated for hours. He does this to attract females during breeding season on Christmas Island. No other seabird has evolved such an extreme display, and the pouch is so delicate a sharp thorn will deflate it instantly.
• A frigatebird's wing-to-body ratio is the most extreme of any bird on Earth: wings spanning 2.3 metres attached to a skeleton weighing only 1.5 kg. They are built so lightly they cannot land on water without sinking — so they pluck fish from the ocean surface mid-flight with a swooping grab that lasts less than a second, then climb away before their feathers get wet.
• Christmas frigatebirds do not breed every year. A female raises a single chick that demands food for 14 months, forcing her to skip breeding entirely the following season. Over a 30-year lifespan, she will raise perhaps 15 chicks. In 2023, fewer than 500 breeding pairs remained on Christmas Island, down from thousands in the 1980s.
• They are compulsive pirates: a frigatebird will chase another seabird mid-air until it drops or regurgitates its catch, then snatch the falling meal before it hits the water. Scientists call this kleptoparasitism. For some frigatebird populations, half their daily food comes from stealing — a strategy that works only because there are enough other birds around to hunt for them.
• Male Christmas frigatebirds are site-faithful for life. A male returns to the exact same branch, sometimes the same twig, every breeding season for decades. If his partner dies, he waits for her return rather than seeking a new mate. This loyalty, combined with their slow breeding rate and tiny island population, makes them uniquely vulnerable to typhoons or oil spills — a single storm could wipe out half the world's population.
