- In 2017 scientists proved the Central American tapeti is its own species, not just a subspecies of the common tapeti. That breakthrough came after detailed looks at its looks and DNA showed enough differences to merit a separate name. The rabbit's common name honors the American paleontologist William More Gabb.
- Scientists list six subspecies of the Central American tapeti, but two dominate the landscape. The nominate S. g. gabbi spreads across eastern Costa Rica, eastern Nicaragua, Honduras, and eastern Panama, while S. g. truei lives in southern Belize, Guatemala, and southeastern Mexico. The other four, consobrinus, messorius, tumacus, and incitatus, are far rarer, with some known only from a single island. This patchwork of forms shows how geography carves distinct rabbit lineages across the region.
- The Central American tapeti's range stretches from eastern and southeastern Mexico all the way to Panama, covering a swath of Central America. In Mexico it inhabits states such as Tamaulipas, San Luis Potosí, Veracruz, Querétaro, Hidalgo, Puebla, Oaxaca, Chiapas, Tabasco and Campeche, then continues through Guatemala, Belize, Honduras, Nicaragua, Costa Rica and Panama.
- One subspecies, S. g. messorius, pushes the rabbit's altitude ceiling to 550 metres (1,800 ft) in the Darién Gap, a narrow stretch of jungle linking Panama and Colombia.
