• A cave fish's eye either never forms or shrinks to nothing before birth—a process called developmental arrest that happens in the womb itself. • Cave fish can survive on almost nothing: a single meal of detritus once every two weeks, metabolism so low they barely move between feeds. In the pitch-black world where they live, a fast metabolism would be suicide—there's no hunting advantage to burning energy quickly when prey is invisible anyway. Over thousands of years, their bodies rewired themselves to run on a pilot light.
